As you may already know, Mumford and Sons is probably my favorite band of all time. Their album Sigh No More got me through my divorce. Babel helped me process the joy of getting married along side the sorrow and grief of my dad’s cancer diagnosis and dropping out of seminary. Wilder Mind reminds me that hardships come and go, but love, laughter, joy, and grace stick.

Today I want us to listen to this song that I posted above. It is one of my very favorite Mumford songs. It’s how they’ve been opening their shows since the album was released and it’s bloody brilliant. The words from the song “Only Love” are an amazing Lenten meditation.

Loneliness and all
I was stuck to the spot without a friend
Alone again

And I hunger and I thirst
For some shiver
For some whispered words
And the promise to come

And you saw me low
Alone again
Didn’t they say that only love will win in the end

I didn’t fool you but I failed you
In short, made a fool out of you
And a younger heart

And I rage and I rage
But perhaps I will come of age
And be ready for you

And you saw me low
Alone again
Didn’t they say that only love will win in the end
Didn’t they say that only love will win in the end

And you saw me low
Alone again
Didn’t they say that only love will win in the end
Didn’t they say that only love will win in the end

While most people in the secular world see Mumford & Sons lyrics as about a lost love or romance of some kind, I know that they are not. Marcus Mumford is an incredibly spiritual man, as are his band mates, and the majority of their lyrics are prayers.

This song is about the desert Jesus faced. It is about loss and pain. It is about being in the midst of suffering and remembering that there is a light at the end of all of the darkness. It is about a time of preparation and waiting to be made whole. It is about God pulling us up from our loneliness and bringing us into the life we’re promised at the cross.

As you go through your day, remember that love is the only thing that will remain when the dust and despair settle and that you are bound up in that love. God’s love is part of who you are, even when you are failing, even when you are hiding, even when  you are running away from it. Because there IS a promise to come, and you are part of that promise.

Psalm 136 (CEB)
Give thanks to the Lord because he is good.
God’s faithful love lasts forever!

Give thanks to the God of all gods—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of all lords—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the only one
who makes great wonders—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the one who made the skies with skill—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the one who shaped the earth on the water—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the one who made the great lights—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
The sun to rule the day—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
The moon and the stars to rule the night—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever!

Give thanks to the one who struck down the Egyptians’ oldest offspring—

    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the one who brought Israel out of there—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
With a strong hand and outstretched arm—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever!

Give thanks to the one who split the Reed Sea in two—

    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the one who brought Israel through—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
And tossed Pharaoh and his army into the Reed Sea—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever!

Give thanks to the one who led his people through the desert—

    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Give thanks to the one who struck down great kings—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
And killed powerful kings—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Sihon, the Amorite king—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Og, king of Bashan—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
Handing their land over as an inheritance—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
As an inheritance to Israel, his servant—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever!

God remembered us when we were humiliated—

    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
God rescued us from our enemies—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever.
God is the one who provides food for all living things—
    God’s faithful love lasts forever!

Give thanks to the God of heaven—

        God’s faithful love lasts forever!

Peace.
